A sensory portrait of Brighton through its seagulls, the sea and familiar sounds, by Laura El-Tantawy, part of the Photo Fringe festival.
Laura El-Tantawy is showing LULL at Unit 6, Duke Lane, from 2 October to 16 October. It's a sensory portrait of Brighton, and El-Tantawy tells it through the town's most mischievous feathery resident, the seagulls, and the rhythms of a seaside home.
LULL is part of Photo Fringe, the UK's most expansive photography festival, which returned in 2026 under the theme 'Feedback Loop'. This edition leans back into the grassroots values that have shaped the festival since 2003: artist-led participation, experimentation, community connection, and self-curated exhibitions. The festival runs across Brighton and Hove, Newhaven, and Portsmouth, with exhibitions in galleries, community venues, and unexpected sites. This year's edition also responds to Phoenix Art Space's theme 'Future Histories'.
El-Tantawy describes LULL as an evolving work, so it's something that changes over the course of the show rather than staying fixed. It's a Brighton portrait built from the things we all recognise: the gulls, the sea, and the familiar sounds of the city. If you've spent any time here, you know exactly which birds she's talking about.
