The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra performs works by Mozart, Bartók, and Pēteris Vasks, featuring soloists Ruth Rogers, Sascha Bota, and Joanna MacGregor.
If you’re looking for something substantial to do on a Sunday afternoon, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) is presenting a concert called Lonely Angel: Mozart and Pēteris Vasks as part of their 2025/26 season. The event takes place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, starting at 14:45, with doors opening at 14:00 at the Concert Hall in the Brighton Dome. The program is designed to offer a mix of drama and energy, contrasting two major Mozart concertos with folk dances and a contemporary meditation.

The afternoon features the BPO under the direction of Joanna MacGregor, who also steps in as the soloist for Mozart’s powerful Piano Concerto no. 20 in D minor—a piece often noted for reflecting the dramatic tension found in his opera Don Giovanni. The program also includes Bartók’s lively Romanian Folk Dances. Perhaps the most intriguing contrast comes from the title piece, Pēteris Vasks’ Lonely Angel: Meditation, which is described as evoking an angel observing the state of the world and bringing comfort and healing through the almost imperceptible touch of its wings. Additionally, the orchestra’s leader, Ruth Rogers, joins the elegant Romanian violist Sascha Bota for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major, highlighting the partnership between the violin and viola.
For those planning to attend, ticket prices range from £13 up to £39, but the BPO has several options to make the concert accessible. Children’s tickets are available for just £1 (with a limit of two per adult ticket), and those under 30 can find tickets starting from £10. There is also a 50% discount available for low-income concessions, applicable to students and those receiving resource-based benefits or disability support. First-time bookers might also be able to take advantage of the £13 LoveMusic offer. Just note that there is a £3.50 charge per order for online and phone bookings, unless you are a member of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival. Finally, if you are bringing younger family members, remember that unaccompanied minors under the age of 14 are not permitted.
