A free 60-minute workshop for children aged 4-10 to learn about composting, including a practical activity to create a mini compost bottle.
It’s always helpful when local spots offer something constructive for the kids, especially when the activity involves getting their hands a little dirty and learning something practical. If you have little ones between 4 and 10 years old, you might want to check out the next session of the Little Seedlings Club happening right here in Brighton.

This month, the workshop is titled "Creative Composting," and it’s scheduled for Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Dobbies Brighton, located on Warren Road. It’s a great way for children to start understanding the basics of sustainability, specifically how garden and food waste can be transformed into healthy soil. The session focuses on the exciting world of composting, teaching them exactly what materials are good to include in the heap and which ones should definitely stay out, emphasizing the importance of this process for both plants and the planet.
The session is designed to be interactive and lasts approximately 60 minutes. The learning is broken up into fun activities, including a classification challenge—sometimes referred to as 'Team Green vs Team Brown'—which helps them quickly grasp the rules of the compost heap. Perhaps the most engaging part is the hands-on activity: each child gets to create their own mini compost bottle to take home. This gives them a tangible reminder of the process and hopefully sparks some lasting interest in gardening and waste reduction.
If this sounds like something your family would enjoy, the best news is that the workshop is completely free of charge. However, since it’s a popular club aimed specifically at that 4 to 10 age group (and requires a parent or guardian to be present throughout the duration), you do need to make sure you book your spot in advance. Given the practical takeaway and the useful topic, it seems like a solid, productive hour spent for any budding young gardener in the area.
