Improvisation session with Robin Fry, a member of Brighton troupes The Maydays and Off the Cuff, exploring the importance of listening in performance.
Robin Fry is running a series of improv sessions at New Venture Theatre on Monday 9, 16 and 23 November, all starting at 19:30. It's a three-week run rather than a one-off, so you can drop in for a single night or follow the thread across the three.
The whole thing is built around one idea: the importance of listening in performance. Fry works through improv exercises and scenes to show how to react to and build on the creativity of fellow performers to create believable worlds, and the audience is invited to follow along as it happens. It's less about watching a finished show and more about seeing the process of improv unfold in real time, with the listening part laid bare.
Fry has been performing and teaching improv around the UK since 2003, and he's a known face in the Brighton scene, having been a member of the improvised comedy troupes The Maydays and Off the Cuff. That background comes through here — this is improv from someone who's spent years doing it on stage and teaching it to others, rather than a casual workshop. If you've ever wondered how an improvised scene actually holds together, this is a good place to see it broken down.
