A double header Easter Sunday special featuring UK ska punk legends Lightyear and American band Slow Gherkin in an early evening show.
For those planning their Easter Sunday on 5th April, The Hope & Ruin on Queens Road is hosting a double header featuring Lightyear and Slow Gherkin. This event, put together by Full Fat Promotions and Beelzebab, brings together two bands with long histories in the ska punk genre. Lightyear are well-known in the UK for their eclectic approach to music, often incorporating funk, hip-hop, and indie-rock into their punk sets. They are sharing the bill with Slow Gherkin, an American band from Santa Cruz, California, who have been active since 1993 and are recognised for their releases on the Asian Man Records label.

The schedule for this particular Sunday is set as an early evening show. Doors are scheduled to open at 16:00, with the entire event wrapping up by 20:00. This timing allows the venue to open the doors to a wider audience, as it is an all-ages show. However, there are clear guidelines for younger attendees: those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and are required to leave the premises once the music finishes at 20:00. Additionally, the venue will be checking identification for anyone who appears to be under the age of 25, so having ID ready is necessary for entry.
Tickets for the show are available for £22.50. The location at 10-12 Queens Road is a familiar spot for anyone who frequents the Brighton music scene, and the early finish provides a different pace compared to the usual late-night Sunday gigs. By starting in the late afternoon, the event fits into the middle of the Easter break without taking up the entire night. The combination of a UK-based group and a touring US band provides a broad look at the ska punk style as it has developed over the last few decades.
