Concert by the Brighton folk-quartet Ladylike, blending shoegaze and pastoral folk traditions at the Wagner Hall.
Ladylike play Wagner Hall on Friday 4 December, a home show for the Brighton quartet. The band is Georgia Butler, Spencer Withey, James Ely and Archie Sagers, and they've built their sound around a particular tension: a thunderous shoegaze approach on one side and a love of pastoral folk tradition on the other. They describe it as raw and pastoral, built on textural, atmospheric swells wired into the tensions of the modern world.
There's a specific origin story behind that sound. The band first started practising in a recital room on a brutalist university campus, a setting they say has seeped into the architecture of their songs, with an emphasis on functionality, honesty and rougher, exposed textures. It's that same contrast — the raw and the refined — that runs through their live sets.
They've played Green Man, Left Of The Dial, The Great Escape, Dot To Dot and Outer Town, and have supported Ugly, Mary in the Junkyard and Lime Garden. Early champions include KEXP, BBC 6 Music, Apple 1, Radio X, DIY, So Young and Rough Trade. Their debut EP landed in the top 10 of the folk charts and got airplay on BBC 6 Music, Radio X and BBC Radio Scotland.
