A night of baroque chamber pop, psych-folk, and jazz-tinged blues featuring Keiron Phelan and Peace Signs, Golden Samphire Band, and The Sonny Crowe Band.
On Thursday, April 9th, The Folklore Rooms in Brighton is hosting a night organized by Folklore Sessions that brings together a mix of baroque chamber pop, psych-folk, and jazz-tinged blues. The evening starts at 19:30 and features three distinct acts, led by Keiron Phelan & Peace Signs. This group returns to the city with a sound rooted in 1970s-style baroque pop, where the arrangements are often as intricate as the subject matter of the songs. Their lyrics cover a fairly wide range of topics, from black sheep philosophers and 1970s pornography to imaginary friends, drawing comparisons to artists like Kevin Ayers, Scott Walker, John Cale, and Neil Hannon.

Joining them is the Golden Samphire Band, an acoustic trio featuring singer Hannah Lewis alongside brothers Mik and Rich Hanscomb, who some might recognize from the band Junkboy. Their music is heavily influenced by the Sussex landscape and what they describe as coastal mysticism. This performance coincides with the release of their debut album, Dream is the Driver, which is scheduled to come out in April 2026. The lineup is completed by The Sonny Crowe Band, marking the first time this 17-year-old multi-instrumentalist has played at this specific venue. His set tends to blend trip hop, jazz, and blues, citing influences such as John Martyn, Tom Waits, and Massive Attack.
The event is geared toward those who appreciate alternative folk and art-pop with a bit of a 70s edge. For those planning to head down to the North Laine for the show, entry is set at £13.00 for a standard ticket, while a concession rate of £8.00 is also available. It’s a straightforward setup for a Thursday night in Brighton, focusing on local and touring musicians within the intimate setting of the Folklore Rooms. With the doors opening at 19:30, it offers a chance to see how these different styles—from the chamber pop of the headliners to the coastal folk and trip hop-influenced blues of the support acts—fit together in a single evening.
