Concert by JJerome87, the solo project of alt-J frontman Joe Newman, performed with session musicians and backing vocalists.
JJerome87 plays Chalk on Wednesday 7 October, from 19:00 to 22:00. The name is the solo moniker of Joe Newman, the frontman of alt-J, the Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello-winning band. This is a solo outing, so it's Newman stepping out from the group project and performing under his own name.
He's not on his own up there, though. The music was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Carlos De La Garza, and he's bringing it to the stage with a dedicated group of session musicians and a trio of female backing vocalists. That's a fair few people on stage for a solo project, and the backing singers in particular point towards where the sound is heading. He describes the result as a Californian sound blended with the energy of Motown, blues and gospel — so expect something with a bit of swing and a fair amount of soul, rather than the more angular indie you might associate with alt-J.
