Jazz at St Andrews brings a tribute to Abdullah Ibrahim to St Andrews in Brighton on Friday 4 September. It's a jazz sextet playing the music of the South African composer and pianist, and the whole night is built around his work.
If you're not familiar with Ibrahim, his sound is South African-inspired jazz full of upbeat rhythms. The concert takes its name from Water From An Ancient Well, the album he released in 1986. It's a record that's had a long life since then: it was later reissued on magenta coloured vinyl in a gate-fold sleeve, and it made the list in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. That's the kind of thing that usually puts a record on the radar for people who might not have come across it otherwise.
Having a full sextet on stage gives the music plenty of room to breathe, and the focus is on Ibrahim's writing rather than any one particular era of his career. The upbeat rhythms that define his style are a good starting point for the evening, and the Water From An Ancient Well title gives you a fair idea of where the set will draw from.
