Jazz quintet Brighton Bop, led by saxophonist Simon Savage, plays the music of pianist Roy Hilton and tunes from early be-bop composers.
Brighton Bop return to St Andrew's Church in Hove on Friday 27 November, part of the Jazz at St Andrews series. It's a welcome return for the quintet, led by saxophonist Simon Savage, and the set reaches back into the past rather than looking for something new.
The evening centres on the music of pianist Roy Hilton, with the group drawing on tunes from early be-bop composers like Horace Silver, Dexter Gordon and Lee Morgan. If those names ring a bell, you've got a good idea of the territory they're covering: the hard-bop era of the 1950s and 60s, when the music was fast, melodic, and built on a strong sense of swing. It's the kind of jazz that sits comfortably between the danceable rhythms of the early days and the more complex improvising that came later.
On stage, the quintet is led by Simon Savage on sax, with Chris Coull on trumpet, Simon Thorpe on bass and Joe Edwards on drums. It's a classic front-line pairing of sax and trumpet, which gives the group plenty of room to trade solos and run through the melodies together.
