Tony Kofi and his quintet play Christmas jazz, pairing traditional tunes with highlights from Charlie 'Bird' Parker, Dizzy 'Diz' Gillespie and Thelonious 'Monk' Monk.
Tony Kofi is back at St Andrew's Old Church on Friday 11 December, his third appearance at the venue in as many years. He's a firm favourite with the audiences who've come along to see him, and this is his latest return to the Hove church.
Kofi is one of the UK's foremost saxophone players, known for an energetic style that draws on the raw energy of modern jazz's early trailblazers. His alto tone drips pure, unadulterated bebop, and the sounds of those pioneers stay close to the musical explorations of every solo. The night is billed as an end-of-year celebration of Christmas jazz, pairing traditional tunes with highlights from Charlie 'Bird' Parker, Dizzy 'Diz' Gillespie and Thelonious 'Monk' Monk.
He's leading a quintet for the evening: Kofi on alto saxophone, Chris Coull on trumpet, John Donaldson on piano, Dan Sheppard on double bass and Joe Edwards on drums. It's an all-ages night, with under-14s accompanied by an adult.
