Historic Lime Plasters, Practice and Maintenance(Cancelled)

The Regency Town House is hosting a talk on historic lime plasters on Sunday 13 September, from 10:10 to 11:10. It's run by Nick Tyson, and the whole thing is part of Heritage Open Days, which the house coordinates across the city this year.

If you live in an old Brighton or Hove house, there's a good chance your walls were originally finished with lime plasters and renders. This session is aimed at owners of those kinds of properties, and it sets out how to care for those original materials. It's not a general history lesson; it's a practical look at what you're actually dealing with inside your own walls and how to keep them in good shape.

The venue itself is a five-storey Grade I listed 1820s terraced house at 13 Brunswick Square, and it runs a series of courses for anyone wanting to understand Georgian and Victorian architecture and the conservation issues involved in keeping such properties upright. They've been taken by students of historic buildings, architecture students, owners of historic homes and construction professionals alike, so you'll be in good company whether you're a professional or just someone who's bought an old house and wants to do right by it.

One thing to keep in mind: the house has no lift, and this session is staged on the lower ground floor, so it's not accessible. Pre-booking is required and places are limited to 20 people, so it's worth getting your name in early if you're interested.
