Talk with Great British Sewing Bee host Patrick Grant on the craft and creativity of sewing, exploring the relationship with clothing and sustainable fashion.
Patrick Grant is coming to the Theatre Royal on Sunday 14 March 2027 for a talk called Hand Made Man. If you recognise the name, it's because he's the host of The Great British Sewing Bee, and that's exactly where he starts. He takes the audience behind the scenes of the Sewing Bee workroom, through Savile Row, and into a reflection on what it means to craft and be creative today.
He draws on stories from his time on television, sharing the triumphs and the last-minute disasters that come with making things that last. From there, he turns to how our relationship with clothing has gone wrong: around 100 billion garments are produced every year, a third of them never worn, and the equivalent of a bin lorry full of clothes is burned or buried every second. His argument is personal, economic, and quietly radical, about what's lost when price becomes the only measure of value.
The evening includes a chance to ask him questions, so it's as much a conversation as a talk. The Theatre Royal itself is a Grade II* listed building that's been entertaining audiences for over 218 years, making it one of the oldest theatres in the country.
