Contemporary classical and experimental pop night by Carolina Cury, accompanied by producer Konstantinos Damianakis, with support from Honddu.
Carolina Cury brings GLISSBLISS to The Folklore Rooms on Thursday 19 November, a night presented by Bait Records. It's a blend of contemporary classical and experimental pop, and she's not on her own: she'll be accompanied by producer Konstantinos Damianakis, with support from Honddu.
Cury comes to Brighton following collaborations with Max Richter and performances at the Southbank Centre and SXSW, so this is a name that's been moving through some serious circles before landing here. The set sits in that space between the composed and the improvised, where classical training meets a pop sensibility that's more interested in texture and atmosphere than in a radio hook. With Damianakis on production, the live sound should have a bit more weight and electronic presence than a solo piano or voice would manage on their own.
Opening the night is Honddu, the duo of Holly Müller and David Neale. They met in a Feminist Literature lecture and have been making analogue-tinged electronic music ever since, working with synths, voice and tape textures. There's a particular story to their sound: they warp half-remembered melodies through a 90s tape machine they found in a skip, and that tapey, slightly worn quality comes through in the comparisons they draw — Portishead, Kate Bush, Jenny Hval, Broadcast and Massive Attack. It's the kind of music that feels like it's being pulled from an old cassette, with a trip-hop ghost hanging over it.
