A concert by tenor Kieran White and the Republic of Viols exploring music of sleep and melancholy, featuring John Dowland's Lachrimae, marking the 400th anniversary of Dowland's death.
Tenor Kieran White and the viol consort Republic of Viols play St Nicholas' Church on Saturday 17 October, starting at 13:00. It's their first time sharing a stage, and the programme they've put together centres on sleep, melancholy and dream-like vision.
The core of the afternoon is the music of John Dowland, whose death this year marks 400 years. White sings his songs, and the consort plays dances from Lachrimae, the collection of consort music Dowland published in 1605. Those two threads run through the whole set, woven together with music by Dowland's contemporaries and a touch of French air de cour.
Republic of Viols is a consort of five viols, with Daniel Murphy on lute. The viol players are Lucine Musaelian, Gavin Kibble, Nathan Giorgetti, Reiko Ichise and Sam Ng. The consort's dances from Lachrimae sit alongside White's songs, and the music of Dowland's peers fills the gaps between them. The whole thing is part of the Brighton Early Music Festival's 'October Unpacked' series, and it's supported by the Continuo Foundation.
