A rare roots reggae double bill featuring Culture with Kenyatta Hill and Cedric Myton of The Congos.
Culture and Cedric Myton share a bill at Chalk on Sunday 8 November, a roots reggae double bill that puts two heavyweights of the genre on the same stage. It's a rare pairing: two names from the original era of Jamaican roots, both still active and playing their material live.
Culture was originally led by Joseph Hill, who fronted the band through the 1970s and gave the world Two Sevens Clash, one of the seminal albums of the period. When Hill passed away unexpectedly in 2006, his son Kenyatta Hill took over the microphone, and he's the one leading the group now, keeping the band's spiritual and musical legacy going. If you know the name but haven't heard them in a while, that's the version of the band you'll see.
Sharing the bill is Cedric Myton, the distinctive falsetto voice and driving force behind The Congos. Their album Heart of the Congos, produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, is widely regarded as one of the greatest reggae records ever made, and Myton is still celebrated for that otherworldly voice — fragile and powerful at the same time. It's a sound that's hard to mistake and easy to remember, and it's the one he'll be bringing to the night.

Between them, they cover a huge stretch of roots reggae history: Culture's 70s classics and The Congos' Perry-produced peak. It's a double bill that lets you hear two different approaches to the same tradition in one evening. The show starts at 6:30 PM at Chalk, in the heart of Brighton.
