CoMA Sussex concert with new music director Yajie Ye, featuring works by Adams, Petley, Terry, Monsalve, Baker, Gander, Hopkins, Hawkins, Goss, Harmar and Offer.
Coma Sussex Ensemble play the Friends' Meeting House on Saturday 24 October, and it's a bit of a milestone for them: it's their first concert with Yajie Ye at the helm. A Chinese conductor, composer and researcher, Yeās work spans contemporary music, orchestral and choral repertoire, and creative production. She has conducted a wide range of concerts and premieres in the UK, US, China, and across Europe, and is also co-founder of Pavilion Ensemble. The whole thing is presented by New Music Brighton.
The programme is a proper spread of new music, eleven pieces in one afternoon. You'll hear Nightly Dreams by Martyn C Adams, Rondo by John Petley, The everyday by Paul G Terry, Impact and Reflection by Diego Monsalve, Chaconny by Phil Baker, Hold On by Chris Gander, Monster Truck Disappointment by Simon Hopkins, Divisibility by John Hawkins, QUARTET for Lots of People by Nigel Goss, Heading south by Roger Harmar and Seascape by Mary Offer. It's a long list of names, and that's the point: the ensemble's whole thing is championing new music by living composers, many of them local.
That's been the group's focus since it was founded in 2005 by local composer Patrick Harrex. They're a Brighton-based instrumental group that rehearses once a month, and they've taken their music well beyond the city, playing across Sussex and in London at venues like St John's Smith Square, West Dean College and Covent Garden's Dragon Hall. This afternoon marks the start of a new chapter with Ye taking over the baton.
