Post-rock five-piece Butch Kassidy perform their immersive and explosive compositions at the Alphabet venue in Brighton.
Butch Kassidy play Alphabet on Saturday 14 November, a post-rock set running from 19:00 to 21:30. They're a five-piece from west London who first emerged in early 2020, and this is a headlining night with them as the sole act on the bill.
Their sound sits in the post-rock tradition, built on immersive, explosive compositions that lean on improvisation, minimalism and metal. They cite Slint and Godspeed You! Black Emperor as influences, and you can hear that lineage in the way they stretch a piece out, letting it build from a quiet, repetitive start into something much louder and more expansive. It's music that takes its time to arrive, and the live show is where that scale really comes through.
One of the tracks that helps pin down where they're coming from is 'Heath', the expansive, devastating closing piece from their 2021 compilation released by Slow Dance Records. It's a good starting point if you're not yet familiar with them, and it gives a sense of the kind of slow-burn, heavy-hitting territory they work in.
