A two-day course providing an introduction to the theory and practice of building with hemp lime, covering new builds, repairs, and insulation.
If you have been looking into sustainable building methods or just curious about how we might construct homes differently, there is a two-day course coming up on June 6 and 7, 2026, at The Earthship in Brighton. The workshop focuses on building with hemp lime, commonly known as hempcrete. It is a practical introduction that covers both the theory behind the material and the actual hands-on application, which is useful whether you are interested in new builds or the repair and insulation of older, historic properties.

The sessions are led by Alex Sparrow, who is a co-director of UK Hempcrete and co-author of The Hempcrete Book, alongside sustainability consultant Mischa Hewitt. They have designed the course to be accessible for everyone, from complete beginners to those who already have some experience in construction. You do not need any prior knowledge to attend, and all the equipment you will need for the practical parts of the workshop is provided on-site. The curriculum covers the current state of the hempcrete industry in the UK, how to select the right binder, and the fundamental methods for construction, including raising a section of wall and applying finishes.
The event takes place at The Earthship on Lewes Road, Stanmer, which is a hub for permaculture and sustainable building practices. The sessions run from 09:00 to 17:30 each day. Because the venue is located near the University of Sussex, it is worth noting that if you are travelling from outside the area, finding local accommodation during the summer months can sometimes be a bit challenging, so it is worth planning ahead.
Regarding the costs, the fees are structured based on income levels to make the training accessible. The standard rate is £365 for those earning over £25,000 per year, while the fee is £300 for those in the £18,000 to £25,000 bracket, and £235 for those earning under £18,000. There is also a concessionary rate of £170 available, though it is worth checking the specific eligibility requirements for that tier. Organizations can also register at the £365 rate. It is open to anyone aged 16 or older, whether you are an architect, a contractor, or simply an autoconstructor interested in learning more about these materials.
