Bruce Foxton, bassist and vocalist of The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers, performs with his all-star band at the CHALK venue in Brighton.
Bruce Foxton plays Chalk on Friday 10 April, part of a UK tour he's doing with his new all-star band. For those who know him as the bassist for The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers, it's a chance to see him fronting his own set rather than holding down the rhythm section.
Foxton's career stretches back nearly five decades. He first came to prominence with The Jam, where he didn't just play bass — he wrote and sang lead on 'News of the World', 'Smithers-Jones', and the Kinks cover 'David Watts'. In 1984, he put out the solo album Touch Sensitive, and later spent more than 15 years touring and recording with Stiff Little Fingers. In 2007, he reunited with former Jam drummer Rick Buckler and guitarist/vocalist Russell Hastings to tour as From The Jam. This tour is a different thing entirely: Foxton out front with his own band.
The Brighton date is presented by AGMP Concerts at Chalk, the 350-capacity room tucked under the Kemptown seafront arches, situated between the Lanes and the Palace Pier. It's a space that usually books indie, electronic, punk and hip-hop, so it fits the bill for a night that draws on Foxton's punk and mod roots.
