Medieval and Renaissance sacred song on Franciscan themes, marking the 800th anniversary of St Francis of Assisi, performed by the BREMF Community Choir.
Brother Sun comes to St Paul's Church on Friday 23 October, a concert marking the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi. The BREMF Community Choir takes the lead, singing medieval and Renaissance sacred song built around Franciscan themes and pieces by Franciscan composers. It's part of the Brighton Early Music Festival, so it sits within the wider early music season the city puts on each year.
The choir is led by Andrew Robinson, and they're joined by Patrizia Bovi and Leah Stuttard on bray harp. Bovi comes from Assisi herself and is a leading interpreter of medieval Italian song, which brings a direct connection to the subject of the evening. The bray harp adds a period instrumental sound to the vocal lines, so the whole thing stays rooted in the era the music comes from.
As for the music, it's all sacred song from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with the Franciscan tradition as the thread. The programme draws on themes associated with St Francis and works by composers within the Franciscan order, so the evening is built around that specific spiritual and musical lineage. It's a choral performance, with the community choir at the centre, and Bovi and Stuttard providing the accompaniment.
