Whispers in the Night

Nocturnalia are playing at St Paul's Church on Saturday 24 October, a matinee that starts at 13:00. The concert is called Whispers in the Night, and the whole thing is built around the story of Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata.

If you're not familiar with the legend, it's a good one to have in your head before you go in. As the story goes, the devil visited the composer in a dream and played a sonata so sublime and devilishly difficult that Tartini woke up and immediately set about transcribing it. The result became one of his finest works, though he spent the rest of his life thinking it was a pale shadow of the music he'd heard in his sleep. That's the thread Nocturnalia are pulling on for this programme.

The ensemble is made up of three: Mojca Jerman on violin, Pablo Tejedor-Gutiérrez on cello and viol, and Alex Mastichiadis on historical keyboards. They're alumni of the BREMF Emerging Artists scheme, and the performance is supported by the Continuo Foundation.

It's a Saturday afternoon slot, so it works if you fancy something before the evening kicks in. Tickets are £16, with under 30s at £8 and under 12s free. The church is on West Street, BN1 2RE.
