A day of bookshop exploration with a group crawl or a self-guided kit to swap recommendations and buy books.
The Brighton & Hove Bookshop Crawl takes over the city on Saturday 19 September, from 09:00 to 18:00. It's part of Bookshop Crawl UK's nationwide programme, and it turns a whole day into a bit of a bookshop tour across various venues in town.
There are two ways to do it. In the afternoon, there's the Group Bookshop Crawl, which they pitch as a way to meet other bookish folk in a low-pressure, socially 'antisocial' manner: you explore bookshops together, swap recommendations and buy books without anyone asking if you really need more. If you'd rather keep to yourself, you can pick up a Self Guided Bookshop Crawl Kit and make your own way around, either on your own or with family and friends. The whole thing runs from 09:00 to 18:00, so you can stretch it across the morning and afternoon or just drop in for a few hours.
The setting fits the day. Brighton is an inclusive, free-thinking city in the heart of Sussex, with Regency squares, crescents, the Royal Pavilion and the piers that have drawn visitors since the 18th century when King George IV fell in love with the town. It sits within a UNESCO World Biosphere Region, borders the South Downs National Park and is about an hour's train ride from London, which makes it an easy day trip if you're coming in from elsewhere.
