Traditional string band playing prohibition-era jazz to Appalachian death folk at Chalk.
Bridge City Sinners play Chalk on Wednesday 30 September, brought to Brighton by Smorgasbord Events. They're a traditional string band from the Pacific Northwest, and the sound they cover is a wide one: prohibition-era jazz on one end, Appalachian death folk on the other. It's a long way from the coast of Oregon to a Wednesday night in Brighton, but they've spent years touring the distance.
They cut their teeth busking on sidewalks across the US, and they've kept that independent streak going since. They still release their records on their own label, Flail Records, and they're known for a live show they describe as "punk-as-f*ck". That energy has taken them from street corners to festivals like Punk Rock Bowling, Muddy Roots, and Oregon's Bluegrass String Summit.
There's some recognition behind the name too. Their record Unholy Hymns was named Best Folk Punk Album of the Year by Folk N Rock, and In the Age of Doubt earned a 2024 Grammy nomination consideration. Between the jazz, the folk, and the punk, they're a string band that doesn't sit still in one place.
