Basement Theory

Basement Theory returns to The Oculist on Friday 28 August, the latest night in the Brighton house music series presented by the venue. It's a house night through and through, and if you've been around the city's club scene for a while, you'll know the Oculist is where it's based.

The series has a specific remit: bringing fresh, underground labels into the city alongside established local talent. The idea is to put new names on the bill next to the DJs who already have a following here, so you get a mix of the unfamiliar and the familiar in one night. It's less about a single headliner and more about the wider house community in Brighton.

As for what to expect on the dancefloor, the nights are built around house, tech and afrobeat, woven together into high-energy sets that run late into the night. The mix of the three gives the music plenty of room to move — the steady pulse of house, the sharper edges of tech, and the rhythmic, percussive drive of afrobeat. It's a broad enough spread to keep things shifting, and the energy stays high from the first record to the last.

Basement Theory is strictly 18+, so you'll need to bring ID. It kicks off at 22:00 on Friday 28 August at The Oculist, 2 Boyce's Street, BN1 1AN, and standard tickets are free.
