Artist-led discussion with six practitioners exploring the relationships between art, place and environmental change, part of WRAP's Tide and Place exhibition.
WRAP is hosting an artist-led discussion on Thursday 22 October, from 18:00 to 20:00, titled Artists in conversation: how can creative practice help shape our relationship with the environment. Six practitioners — Andy Ash, Lucinda Button, Laura Callaghan, Nina Garstang, Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez and Simon Roberts — will be in the room together to talk about the links between art, place and environmental change.
The evening is built around Tide and Place, an exhibition by UK-based artists that looks at how we interact with, inhabit, narrate and think of the marine environment, both individually and on a collective scale. Set against the Anthropocene crisis, the work asks how we can reinforce our position as part of nature rather than apart from it, pulling together a variety of mediums, practices and community initiatives to spark a conversation between the self and the sea. The discussion draws on that exhibition, so the talk is tied to the work on the walls.
With six contemporary artists and educators on the panel, the conversation will bring together different ways of working and thinking about the environment. It's an artist-led session, so you'll hear from the people actually making the work rather than a curator or a critic. Beyond the talk, there's a social side to the night: you can connect with other local creatives and spend some time with the exhibition itself. If you've already seen Tide and Place, this is a chance to hear the artists talk through it; if you haven't, it's a good way to get into it.
