Late-night duo concert weaving songs by John Dowland with music from Robert Johnson, Henry Purcell and Errollyn Wallen, presented as part of the 'One Song' exhibition.
Ruby Hughes and Jonas Nordberg are playing Fabrica on Saturday 17 October, a late-night duo concert that sits within the city's early music scene. Hughes is a soprano and Nordberg a lutenist, and this is their festival debut. The evening is called Amidst the Shades.
The set is built around the songs of John Dowland, the great English lutenist and composer of the late sixteenth century, but it doesn't stop there. Hughes and Nordberg weave his work together with music from Robert Johnson, John Danyel, Henry Purcell and Errollyn Wallen, so you'll hear Dowland alongside composers from different eras. The idea is to create a dialogue between voices from the past and the present, with the lute and voice carrying it through.
There's a bit more to it than just the concert. The evening is part of One Song, an exhibition and community archive by artist Kadir Karababa, whose accompanying programme brings the work to life through music, conversation and shared experiences. Amidst the Shades is presented in partnership with the Brighton Early Music Festival as part of Dowland Day, and Fabrica itself is a Grade II listed former Regency church on Duke Street. Capacity is limited, so it's one of those nights where it pays to book early rather than turning up on the door.
