A Christmas Carol performed by candlelight with a Victorian soundtrack of carols, on Christmas Eve.
A Christmas Carol by Candlelight comes to St Michael & All Angels Church on Sunday 13 December, with the curtain going up at 19:30. It's the Dickens story you know, staged by candlelight and set to a soundtrack of Victorian carols.
Robert Tremayne adapted the story for the stage and leads the company as Ebenezer Scrooge. The production follows the miserly Scrooge as he's guided by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Be through the rooms of his own past, confronting the choices he's made and the lonely future that awaits him if his heart remains closed. The Muses of Dionysus make up the ensemble, with Lauren Whedbee playing Mrs Cratchit and Kelly Verstappen as Jacob Marley. Vicky Newman directs the production and joins the company on stage as the Narrator.
The candlelight and the Victorian carols run throughout, so the music is as much a part of the evening as the dialogue. It's a Sunday night performance, and the church setting puts it right in the middle of the city's Christmas run.
