A dance-theatre duet by Lo Fang-Yun exploring the historical tensions between Taiwan and China, weaving personal memories into world history.
The Seas Between Us comes to Pavilion Dance South West on Friday 2 October, a dance-theatre duet by German-based Taiwanese choreographer Lo Fang-Yun. It's a collaboration with artists from Taiwan, Singapore and China, produced by Polymer DMT in Essen with co-production from HELLERAU European Centre for the Arts in Dresden and PACT Zollverein in Essen. On stage, Lo is joined by dancers Chou Shu-Yi and Lee Mun Wai.
The work is dedicated to the unresolved conflict between Taiwan and China and, more broadly, to the relationship between historically Chinese-influenced societies and the West. It draws on the artistic biographies of the dancers to weave personal memories into world history, exploring identity and the impact of political systems on the individual. It's a duet that looks at a geopolitical tension through the lens of the people living within it, rather than from a distance.
