Roni Size Reprazent celebrate the 30th anniversary of New Forms with a live band tour, supported by Fabio & Grooverider.
Roni Size Reprazent play the O2 Academy on Thursday 3 June, part of a nine-date UK tour marking the 30th anniversary of New Forms. The set draws on that album alongside highlights from the wider Reprazent catalogue, and they're performing as a full live band: Roni Size on keys, Dynamite MC and Onallee on vocals, Si John on bass, plus live drums and additional keyboards. Fabio & Grooverider are on as special guest support.
New Forms was the album that made Roni Size Reprazent. Released in June 1997, it formalised Size's sound into a full band project, folding jazz, soul and hip-hop into drum and bass and birthing 'Brown Paper Bag'. It went platinum and produced staples like 'Heroes' and 'Watching Windows'. It also beat Radiohead's OK Computer and The Prodigy's The Fat of the Land to the Mercury Prize.
The group emerged from Bristol's Full Cycle Records, which Size co-founded with DJ Krust, DJ Die and Suv in the early '90s, when the label's jazz-inflected breakbeats stood apart from London's darker jungle scene. The tour returns as a full live band, and the set draws on New Forms alongside highlights from the wider Reprazent catalogue. Size put it this way: '30 years ago we started something that was never supposed to stand still. Three decades later, the sound is still moving forward.'
