Group exhibition by three local painters from the Access BEAF Network on identity and belonging.
Portals opens at The Old School House on Saturday 3 October, a group exhibition bringing together three painters from the Access BEAF Network. The show comes from an open call held earlier in the year, and the three artists on the wall are Jaya Edwards, Rachael Lee and Zsubilla. The Access BEAF Network is a supportive group for neurodivergent, disabled and global majority artists working across Dorset and Hampshire, so this is a local show in a very real sense.
Each artist brings something quite different to the room. Jaya Edwards is a recent Fine Art graduate whose work looks at identity, belonging and cultural heritage. Rachael Lee is a painter who centres on the figure within psychologically charged spaces. And Zsubilla, who has lived in the UK for more than 18 years, makes abstract paintings that draw on childhood stories of magical kingdoms; she's shown widely, including at Nolias Gallery and the Liszt Ferenc Institute in London.
Between them, they cover a fair bit of ground—from the figure and the abstract to the personal and the imagined—all held together by that shared thread of identity and belonging. It's a good chance to see three local painters working in different directions, and to get a feel for what's coming out of the Access BEAF Network.
