A political conference inspired by the work of Adam Curtis, described as an alternative political gathering for revolutionaries, featuring discussions and a disco.
The Adam Curtis Party Conference takes over Freemasons' Hall on Saturday 12 September, from 10am to 11pm. It's a day-long political gathering organised by Brian Jenner, who describes it as an "Edinburgh Festival for revolutionaries."
The whole thing is named after the BBC documentary maker Adam Curtis, known for his films that untangle the failures and complexities of modern society. The conference is billed as an alternative political gathering in the style of one of Curtis's own films, and the day draws on themes from his documentaries: the limits of political language, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the dangers of populism. It also leans into the emotional nostalgia a seaside town like Bournemouth has in spades.
Jenner's starting point is that millions find established parties interchangeable and newer ones a rehash of old ideas. He proposes Curtis's wry humour and provocative observations as a talisman to bring people together, with the aim of inspiring fresh ideas and discussion beyond mainstream political discourse. The day closes with an Adam Curtis-inspired disco fronted by a Pan's People tribute group.
