Guided sensory walk through the Jewellery Quarter followed by a five-course tasting menu at GULP, led by artist and sensory designer Kaye Winwood.
Taste the Jewellery Quarter is a sensory walk and dinner running on Saturday 14 November, 17:30-20:30, with the same experience on other Saturdays too. It starts with a guided walk through the Jewellery Quarter's hidden streets and historic squares, where an expert guide opens the area through sight, sound, smell and texture — from the scent of metal workshops to the details of centuries-old craftsmanship. The walk ends at GULP, an intimate ten-seat creative dining studio in a Grade II listed building at 58 Spencer St, where artist and sensory designer Kaye Winwood serves a tasting menu shaped by the walk, each dish interpreting an element of the Quarter's character.
Winwood is a pioneer of 'expanded dining', fusing food, art and immersive experiences. Her work has been commissioned by the Barbican, Midlands Arts Centre, the Venice Design Biennale, Ikon Gallery and Supersonic Festival, and has ranged from an eight-course journey inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing to experimental sound-led meals. This particular experience was developed as part of 'Sensing the JQ', a research-led project that reimagines the character of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter through sound, scent, touch, taste and visuals.
