Intimate 10-seat multi-course tasting menu by artist Kaye Winwood that translates the Jewellery Quarter's materials, architecture and stories into a sensory dining experience.
Taste the Jewellery Quarter is a multi-course tasting menu hosted at GULP on Friday 11 December, from 7pm to 9pm. It's the work of artist and sensory designer Kaye Winwood, who runs GULP as her intimate 10-seat dining studio in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter. The evening is part of her wider Sensing the JQ project, a sensory research initiative exploring the unique character of the neighbourhood, supported by a JQ Common Room Microgrant. The menu translates the area's materials, architecture and stories into a series of courses, so it's less a meal and more a way of eating the neighbourhood.
Winwood has spent years working with what she calls 'expanded dining', the idea that eating can be a multi-sensory journey combining flavour with sound, texture, light, narrative and environment. It's a fairly distinct approach to a dinner party, and she's built a career around it. Her work has been commissioned by the Barbican, Midlands Arts Centre, the Venice Design Biennale, Ikon Gallery, Flatpack Festival and Supersonic Festival, and has ranged from theatrical eight-course journeys inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing to experimental sound-led meals and interactive sensory banquets. This sitting takes that same sensibility and turns it towards the local streets just outside the door.

Because GULP is a 10-seat studio, it's a small, close-knit group rather than a restaurant service, and the whole thing runs for about two hours. The room is on the first floor of a Grade II listed building and is accessible by stairs only. Tickets are £75 per person for the multi-course tasting menu, with drinks at an additional cost. It runs from 7pm to 9pm on Friday 11 December.
