Halloween special night of music from across the world, from Latin and Bhangra to Hip-Hop, with live percussion, vinyl DJing and a costume contest.
PHUNK! returns to BRIG Cafe at the Warehouse on Friday 30 October, this time as a Halloween special. The name is a bit of a shorthand for the night: the Political and the Funk you'll find on the dancefloor. It's a collaboration between Unite The People, Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG), Beyond Racism and Stories That Made Us, and it frames itself as a welcoming safe space of unity, community and solidarity, with the stated aim of challenging racism through art and culture.
The music pulls from across the world, with Latin, Bhangra and Hip-Hop all in the mix, and the night is rounded off with visuals, desi snacks and a bar. On the decks, DJ Deesh works vinyl only, joined by live percussionist Mahendra Patel, who you might know as Kadence Music, and guest DJ Ayah. Between the two DJs and the live percussion, there's a good chance the dancefloor stays busy for most of the night.
Because it's a Halloween special, there's a costume angle to it: you're encouraged to turn up in fancy dress, and the best outfit gets a free drink. It's the kind of night that works just as well if you go all out as if you just throw something together on the way.
