Professional conference on intravenous therapy and patient safety, with two streams on extravasation injury and OPAT services and five hours of CPD training.
The National IV Therapy Summit comes to thestudio in Birmingham on Friday 23 October, run by the National Infusion and Vascular Access Society (NIVAS). It's a day for the people on the front line of IV therapy: vascular access specialists, IV therapy teams, OPAT leads, infection specialists, pharmacists, community IV teams, Hospital at Home services, patient safety leads and senior nurses. If that sounds like your day job, this is where you'll find your crowd.
The day is split into two streams, so you can follow the one that fits your work best. One focuses on improving patient safety, with a particular look at infiltration and extravasation injury. The other is about expanding and improving practice in OPAT services. Between the two, you'll pick up five hours of CPD training.
Much of the programme centres on the 2026 National Standards for Vascular Access and Intravenous Infusion Therapy, which are expected in July 2026. They're more than 150 evidence-based standards covering device selection, insertion, care and complication management, designed to help NHS organisations review their practice, improve consistency and strengthen governance. The business case for getting it right is stark: NHS Resolution data from 2011 to 2021 linked 444 extravasation injury claims to a cost of £15.6 million.
