Weekly night of live jazz at The Night Owl in which Nick Malcolm plays the music of Monk, Miles, Anthony Braxton and his own originals.
Nick Malcolm is the next name on the Digbeth Jazz bill, playing The Night Owl on Tuesday 3 November. He'll be working through a set that pulls from the jazz canon and his own writing, with the music of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Anthony Braxton sitting alongside his own originals.
If those names ring a bell, you've got a good idea of the ground he's covering. Monk and Davis are the heavyweights of the mid-century jazz tradition, while Braxton represents the more adventurous, avant-garde side of the music. Hearing them in the same set, and mixed in with Malcolm's own compositions, should give you a sense of where he's coming from.
