Annual conference for schools and education professionals supporting children in care, with the 'Empowering Us' exhibition of work by care-experienced young people.
The Birmingham Virtual School Annual Conference is at Alexander Stadium on Wednesday 11 November, a day for schools and education professionals who support children in care and care-experienced young people. It's a professional gathering, but the heart of it is something quite different from the usual conference talk.
That's the 'Empowering Us' exhibition, which runs alongside the day. It gives Birmingham children and young people who are in care, have been in care, or are known to a social worker the chance to have their voices heard. They share their experiences, ideas and views about education through artwork, photography, poetry, writing and digital media, answering questions like 'What helps you feel heard, listened to and involved in your education?' and 'What is the best way for adults to understand children and young people's views?'.
Their contributions are displayed throughout the conference, and they're not just there for show — they're intended to help shape how professionals can better support them. It's a rare occasion where the people the whole day is about actually get to set the tone and share their perspective directly with the people working in the field.
