Carlos Acosta's reimagining of the 19th-century classic La Bayadère, set in Renaissance Venice, with the Minkus score played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
Birmingham Royal Ballet are bringing The Maiden of Venice to the Birmingham Hippodrome from Saturday 20 February, running through to Saturday 27 February. It's a brand-new reimagining of the 19th-century classic La Bayadère, with the action moved to Renaissance Venice. The story follows Admiral Sandro, who returns to the city to marry the Doge's daughter but is reunited with his childhood love, Nicoletta; her guardian, Bishop Olivolo, is also in love with her and vows to destroy him. The whole thing is built around the famous Kingdom of the Shades, so if you've seen La Bayadère before, that's the part that stays.
Carlos Acosta is the one behind the choreography, working after Marius Petipa, and he's also the one who shifted the setting to Venice. Yu Kurihara takes the role of Nicoletta, with Frieda Kaden as a Shade. The music is the original Ludwig Minkus score, played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, with arrangements by Gavin Sutherland. Set and costume designs come from Anna Fleischle.
