Free exhibition by artist Kerrie Hanna, created during her residency at the Botanic Gardens, using plant-based inks, pigments and charcoal to explore the Gardens' history and biodiversity.
Kerrie Hanna opens her new exhibition, The Earth is the First Body, at the Botanic Gardens Palm House on Saturday 24 October, and it stays open until Sunday 6 December. It's the result of her time as artist-in-residence at the Gardens, so the whole thing grew right out of the place it's being shown.
What makes it work is where the materials come from. Hanna didn't just paint the Gardens; she made her own inks, pigments and charcoal from the plants growing there. The work looks back at the site's history, including the Victorian era when plants were moved across the world, and holds that up against the effort to protect biodiversity today. There's stained glass alongside other pieces, and together they ask where we fit into the natural world and what our part is in looking after it.

Because it's an exhibition rather than a one-night thing, you've got a good window to catch it. It runs from 24 October through to 6 December, so if you can't make the opening weekend, you can still drop in later in the autumn. It's free to see, and it's held in the Palm House, right in the heart of the Botanic Gardens.
