Conversation with arts journalist Jane Coyle about her theatre anthology 'A Better Locksmith', with readings by actors Ruairi Conaghan and Caitriona Hinds.
Jane Coyle is at The Harrison on Sunday 25 October, talking about her new book A Better Locksmith. It's a conversation with David Grant, with readings from the book by actors Ruairi Conaghan and Caitriona Hinds.
Coyle is a Welsh-born arts journalist and critic who's spent more than forty years travelling across Northern Ireland recording its theatre industry. A Better Locksmith is the result: a landmark anthology of her reviews, interviews, features and news stories for publications like The Irish Times, The Stage, The Sunday Times and Theatre Ireland, spanning 1984 to 2025. It charts the evolution of an internationally acclaimed community of theatre makers who worked through civil unrest, social and political upheaval and financial pressure.
David Grant, a theatre director and former Queen's University Belfast drama lecturer, wrote the book's foreword, sharing Coyle's recollections of those four decades and steering the conversation on the day. The readings come from plays featured in the anthology, among them Northern Star, Agreement, Lay Up Your Ends and Philadelphia, Here I Come!.
