One-day woodcarving workshop for beginners to make a hand-carved Christmas decoration with Steve Ryan of Green Woodwork Ireland.
Steve Ryan is running a one-day woodcarving workshop at The Duncairn on Friday 27 November, from 12:00 to 15:00. He comes from Green Woodwork Ireland, and the whole session is built around making a hand-carved Christmas decoration to take home.
It's a beginner's class, so you don't need any previous experience to sign up. You'll pick from a few different festive designs and spend the afternoon learning how to handle a range of woodcarving chisels safely and effectively. The idea is to get into the Christmas spirit and leave with something you've made yourself to brighten your home.
One practical thing to keep in mind: you'll need sturdy boots or shoes, as open-toed or low-cut footwear isn't suitable for this kind of work. Steve provides the safety gloves, so you've got that covered.

The Duncairn is in North Belfast, in the city's Cultural Quarter. It's been putting arts at the heart of the area since 2014, working as an arts centre, concert venue, theatre space and art gallery. It specialises in live folk, acoustic and traditional Irish music, and runs a year-round programme of classes and workshops—things like shared reading, set dancing, watercolours, seed saving, sewing, crochet and herbal remedy-making. This woodcarving session fits right into that mix.
The class runs from 12:00 to 15:00 on Friday 27 November, and it costs £40 with materials included.
