Book talk by Jennifer L. Bristol presenting her work 'Wild Women for Good: Stories of Conservation in Texas' at the Austin Woman's Club.
Jennifer L. Bristol talks about her book, Wild Women for Good: Stories of Conservation in Texas, at Chateau Bellevue on Thursday, September 3. The talk is hosted by the Austin Woman's Club, which has called the historic venue home since 1929.
Wild Women for Good chronicles the women who have shaped the Texas landscape over the last 150 years, with more than 60 profiles of conservationists from across the state. During the talk, Bristol focuses on a few specific stories. One is Mamie Powell, an Austin resident who helped establish the Texas state park system in the 1920s. Another is the group known as the "seven little old ladies in tennis shoes" who fought to protect the 300-acre Wild Basin Preserve. Their 1975 grassroots campaign raised $284,000 in cash and secured more than $370,000 in donated land, bolstered by $654,000 in federal matching funds.
Bristol is well-known in the local nature community. She also wrote Parking Lot Birding and Cemetery Birding, serves on the City of Austin Environmental Commission, and directs the Victor Emanuel Nature Scholarship Fund. The talk comes at a particular moment for the host: the Austin Woman's Club is a woman-owned 501(c)(3) nonprofit celebrating its 150th anniversary. The venue itself, Chateau Bellevue, was built in 1874.
