Whitey Johnson

Whitey Johnson plays The Continental Club on Friday, August 21, with doors opening at 9:30 PM and the show starting at 10 PM. It's an R&B outfit fronted by Gary Nicholson, a two-time Grammy winner whose songs have been recorded more than 600 times by artists like Buddy Guy, Ringo Starr and Delbert McClinton. The band describes their set as soul-tinged, 'feel-better-blues.'

Nicholson isn't on his own for this one. He's joined by Kaz Kazanoff and Derek O'Brien, with more players added to the mix. The whole night is 21+ only, so you'll need your ID to get in.

The Continental Club is a South Congress staple that opened in 1957. Steve Wertheimer took it over thirty years later, and since then it's served as a home for touring and local Americana, rockabilly and swing. Its Tuesday happy hours mix sultry jazz, country and blues, while Monday belongs to homegrown honky tonk with Dale Watson. Other regulars include Earl Poole Ball on Saturdays and Heybale! on Sundays. The club was named Best of Austin Readers Poll Intimate Live Music Venue in 2023, 2021, 2019 and 2017.

It's a late one, with the music kicking off at 10 PM, and there's a $12 cover at the door.
