Concert by Austin fiddler and singer-songwriter Warren Hood, with special guest Emily Gimble.
Warren Hood plays The 04 Center on Friday, October 16, with Emily Gimble as his special guest. It's a pairing of two Austin musicians who both grew up in the city's string tradition, and the bill brings together two different sides of that scene.
Hood is a fiddler and multi-instrumentalist who works across violin, guitar, and mandolin, and he's as much a singer-songwriter as he is a player. He started classical violin at 11, earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he won the String Achievement Award, and spent more than a decade as a sideman for Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Alejandro Escovedo, and Joe Ely, and played with The Waybacks. He ran a seven-year Sunday-night residency at Momo's in Austin before forming the Warren Hood Band, which records and plays at ABGB and released the 2013 album Warren Hood Band, produced by Charlie Sexton. He's a seven-time Austin Music Award winner for Best Strings.
Gimble comes from a musical family: her father is guitarist and upright bass player Dick Gimble, and her grandfather was the fiddler Johnny Gimble. She was named Best Keyboards by the Austin Music Awards three times and recorded A Case of the Gimbles with her father and grandfather in 2005. Between Hood's background in the city's songwriting and session circles and Gimble's family ties to the Gimble name, the two share a deep connection to the Austin sound.
