JD McPherson performs live at The 04 Center, with special guest Melissa Carper, as part of the Rock Austin series.
JD McPherson plays The 04 Center on Sunday, December 6, as part of the Rock Austin series. He's touring SOCKS, his breakthrough Christmas album released in 2018 on New West Records. It's a full holiday record—eleven original Christmas songs, all written by him—and it ended up as the best-reviewed holiday album of its year. This tour brings those songs to the stage, so the set is built around the record.
McPherson comes from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and his path to the stage wasn't a straight line. He studied experimental film at the University of Oklahoma and earned an M.F.A. in open media from the University of Tulsa, and he was working as a middle school art teacher before he signed with Rounder. That background in visual art and film still sits behind his work as a musician.
He's not playing alone. Joining him is Melissa Carper, a country musician from North Platte, Nebraska, whose repertoire pulls from old-time, bluegrass, western swing, jazz, and blues. Critics and fellow musicians have called her "HillBillie Holiday," a nod to how she weaves those styles together. Between McPherson's original Christmas songs and Carper's range, the bill covers a lot of ground in one night.
