A weekly slow-motion spectacle where attendees bet on turtle races, accompanied by a live DJ and drink sponsors.
Turtle Racing is back at Little Woodrow's Southpark Meadows tonight, Thursday, September 17, starting at 7 PM. It's a regular fixture for the bar, which bills it as "South Austin's favorite slow-motion spectacle."
The format is as simple as it gets: when you arrive, you grab a turtle card, pick your favorite turtle, and settle in with a cold beer. From there, you watch the races run. The drink sponsors rotate each night, so the beer on tap changes depending on when you drop in, and a live DJ keeps the crowd hyped through every round. It's the kind of thing that works better in person than it sounds on paperβthe slow pace is the whole point, and the room gets surprisingly loud when the turtles finally make their move.
If tonight doesn't work, you've got plenty of other chances. The races run on the first three Thursdays of every month, so it's a recurring thing rather than a one-off. If you're in South Austin on one of those nights, you can just swing by and get into it without much planning. It's a low-stakes way to spend a Thursday evening, especially if you're already in the neighborhood.
