AFS Cinema is bringing The Yogurt Shop Murders to the big screen on Saturday, August 29, at 2:00 PM. It's part of a three-night run presented by the Austin Film Society, which is showing Margaret Brown's documentary series in its entirety, with each screening paired with a panel discussion.
If you're not familiar, the series is an Austin-made HBO/A24 production that brought one of the city's most searing and traumatic unsolved mysteries to national attention when it first aired. The case dates back to 1991, and for decades it remained one of the most notorious open wounds in the city's history. Less than a month after the series premiered, new technology revealed critical evidence and the case was closed. Brown returned to the subject with a final fifth episode, The End of Wondering, which looks at that closure and what it means to finally have an answer after so many years of uncertainty.
The AFS is presenting the complete series across three screenings, each one paired with a different panel. The first is with the victims' families; the second with the filmmaking team; and the final one with the investigators and the exonerated accused, moderated by Richard Linklater himself. The Austin Film Society was founded in 1985 by Linklater, and he's the one leading the conversation for this last session.
