Screening of Jane Campion's acclaimed film 'The Piano' at AFS Cinema, presented as part of the cinema's weekly lineup.
AFS Cinema is bringing Jane Campion's The Piano back to the big screen this weekend as part of the Austin Film Society's weekly lineup. It's a new 4K restoration, so the image should be as sharp as it gets for a film that's over thirty years old. The movie is a New Zealand, Australian, and French co-production from 1993, running 1 hour and 57 minutes.
The story follows Ada, a mute pianist who arrives in colonial New Zealand with her daughter for an arranged marriage. When her domineering husband refuses to transport her cherished piano, a frontiersman offers her land in exchange for the instrument and private lessons. It's a slow-burn of a film that lets the music and the landscape do a lot of the talking, and the 4K restoration means you'll see the rugged New Zealand coast and the interior of that piano in a lot more detail than you would on a streaming service.
It's a heavy hitter from the awards circuit: it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and three Academy Awards—Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. Roger Ebert was among the critics who praised it, and it's still one of Campion's most recognized works.

There are several screenings to choose from: Friday, Aug 14 and Saturday, Aug 15 both start at 7 PM; Sunday, Aug 16 is a matinee at 2 PM; and Monday, Aug 17 is at 4:15 PM. Tickets are $15 for evening shows and $12 for matinees, which applies to shows before 5 PM from Monday through Friday. AFS MAKE & WATCH members get $4 off, and LOVE & Impact Circle members get in free.
