AFS Cinema is screening Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc on Friday, August 21, with a live heavy metal score by The Silent Light. The film is a silent classic from 1928, and it's one of the most intense things ever put to screen. It follows Joan of Arc's trial in the final hours before her execution, and it's widely considered Dreyer's most acclaimed masterpiece.
If you've never seen it, the film is famous for its close-ups. Maria Falconetti's performance as Joan is still regarded as one of the greatest in cinema history, and Dreyer keeps the camera tight on her face to put you right inside her experience. The direction relies on expressionistic lighting, interconnected sets, and those painfully intimate close-ups to pull you into Joan's subjective world. It's a heavy, focused piece of filmmaking, and the live score is going to run alongside it for the full 81 minutes.
The screening is part of the Live Score series at AFS Cinema, the repertory and first-run arthouse of the Austin Film Society, which filmmaker Richard Linklater founded in 1985. The night is supported by KUTX, Sound Unseen Austin, and Alliance Française d'Austin.
